First setup

You’ve installed Sail (see Install with Docker Compose), and it printed a setup link. This page walks through the wizard, then the half hour of setup that makes the difference between “it works” and “people love it”.

Have these ready:

  • The setup link from the server’s log. It works for 24 hours. Restarting Sail before setup is finished prints a new one.
  • An app registered in your identity provider, or permission to create one.
  • Your Nexus address, and someone who can approve Sail in Nexus.

Open the setup link. The wizard has five steps.

This is how your people will sign in, using the accounts they already have.

  1. Click Copy redirect URI.

  2. In your identity provider, create a new app (OpenID Connect, web application) and paste the redirect URI.

  3. Copy the provider’s Issuer URL, Client ID and Client secret into Sail.

  4. Decide who can sign in:

    • Allowed email domains, such as northwind.com. Anyone with an email at that domain can sign in.
    • Required group, such as sail-users. Only members of that group can sign in.

Set one or both. With both, people need to match both.

  5. Click Save and continue. Sail checks it can reach your provider before moving on.

Not sure what goes where for your provider? See Sign in with your identity provider.

Click Sign in to become the owner and sign in with your work account. You become Sail’s first owner, the person who manages it for everyone.

This is also the real test of step 1. If sign-in fails here, click Change sign-in provider and check the details.

Sail reaches every model, web search and tool through Msty Nexus. Enter your Nexus address, then approve Sail in Nexus. Pair Sail with Nexus walks through it.

Everyone’s chats start with Sail’s default assistant, so this choice matters.

  • Under Models, pick the model it answers with. Pick a strong, well-rounded model: most of your company’s chats will use it.
  • Under Utility model, pick a small, fast model. It writes chat titles, saves memories and summarizes long chats. It never answers people directly, but a weak one makes memory worse.

You can change both later.

Copy Sail’s address, click Start chatting, and you’re in.

Before you tell the company, set these up. Each one makes every chat better.

Then share Sail’s address. People’s accounts are created the first time they sign in.

On the server, run:

docker compose exec sail sail admin recover

It prints a one-time link, valid for an hour, that makes whoever signs in with it an owner. Use it when the setup link is lost, or when every owner is locked out. The audit log records both the link and its use.
